Essequibo 101

Why “101”?

Essequibo 101 takes you to the Essequibo Coast for an immersive day trip — history, local cuisine, and nature in one all-inclusive package. Cross the Essequibo River by water taxi, savour local flavours, tour the iconic Aurora Chimney, visit Damon’s Square, then unwind at Lake Capoey, a tranquil blackwater lake.

The coast holds centuries of history, remarkable nature, and some of the best-loved food in the country. If you’ve just arrived in Guyana and want one day that captures what this place is about, start here. You’ll come home understanding why Essequibo is called the Cinderella county.

The day balances four things — history, nature, food, and relaxation — without rushing any of them.

What the day holds

History. The Essequibo coast was once home to 37 sugar mills, and its landmarks still stand — a colonial-era chimney, a monument, and Damon’s Square among them. Your guide brings the stories; the exact stops are confirmed on the day.

Nature. The centrepiece is Lake Capoey, a natural blackwater lake — calm, slow water stained a deep tea colour by the surrounding vegetation, resting on pale white sand. It’s lovely for an easy swim, and the contrast of dark water against white sand makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the coast.

Food. The region is beloved for its food stops — from Jenny B’s family local favourites (people cross the river for it) to the award-winning curry. All of our day trips include food; tell us about any dietary needs or allergies when you request the tour.

Relaxation. The day slows down at the lake, with lunch and a swim — this is a tour built for slowing down, not ticking boxes.

Getting there and back

The day starts at Parika, the river hub about an hour’s drive west of Georgetown, where boats depart at around 7:30 am. If you’d rather not arrange your own transport, choose Georgetown pickup and we’ll collect you from your accommodation at around 6:30 am for a small per-person add-on. The full day’s schedule, including your return time, is confirmed with your quote.

What to bring

  • Swimwear — you’ll want it at Lake Capoey
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection — sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medication, if needed
About wildlife. The lake and the river crossings offer opportunities to see birds and other wildlife — but sightings depend on nature and are never guaranteed.
The crossing

The river is the first lesson

Your Essequibo education starts the moment the boat leaves Parika. At its widest point, the river is as wide as Barbados is long, and its largest island is as long as Barbados is wide. We navigate 7 of the 365 islands across the delta on the way to Supenaam — a crossing that’s not a transfer to sit through, but the first sight that makes most visitors reach for their cameras.
