The Rupununi is the other Guyana — the vast savannah country in the deep south, where rainforest gives way to open grassland, ranches, wetlands, and Amerindian communities, and the horizon goes further than most visitors have ever seen it go. Over five days and four nights, this expedition explores the North, Central, and South Rupununi: a serious, rewarding journey through one of the least-visited corners of South America.

This is our tour for travellers who’ve done comfortable and want remote — rugged, off the beaten path, and unlike anything on the coast. It has drawn particular interest from adventure travellers from the United States and the United Kingdom, and from birders, for whom the savannah and its wetlands are extraordinary ground.

Be honest with yourself about the road

The Rupununi is far away, and getting there is part of the expedition — we want you to choose this trip with open eyes. Expect around 18 hours of total road travel across the trip in an air-conditioned bus, broken up with stops roughly every two hours and attractions along the way. The roads of the interior are long and unpaved; the days can be hot and dusty; and the reward is a part of the world very few people ever see. If that trade excites you rather than worries you, this is your trip.

Who this expedition is for

• Small groups. We’re shaping this trip around groups of roughly 4–8 travellers — small enough to stay flexible and personal.
• Adventurous, patient travellers. People who are comfortable with long travel days, simple conditions, and plans that flex with the savannah.
• Birders and wildlife travellers. The Rupununi’s grasslands and wetlands offer opportunities to see wildlife found nowhere near the coast — though, as everywhere in nature, sightings are never guaranteed.
